Our Paris trip would not have been complete without a stop to see the ‘Love Locks’ at the Pont d’Amour Bridge, also known as Pont des Arts. Since 2008, couples from all over the world have been sealing their love with a lock on this infamous Paris bridge. What exactly started this movement is not clear, but it has quickly become a thing to do in while in France. When we arrived at the bridge, it was quite the sight to see. There were thousands of locks, each individually engraved with names of lovers and memories. After skimming through lock after lock, one thing became apparent – Paris is the city of LOVE.
Au Revoir Paris Love Locks
While we didn’t lock our love on the bridge that day, we did get lucky with timing. We learned that all of the locks would be removed only a few weeks from our departure from Europe. Reason? The heavyweight of all the locks had caused substantial damage to the bridge over time. In order to protect the safety of the visitors and preserve Parisian heritage, the Mayor of Paris had taken measures to have them removed. Sigh…
While we agree with the Mayor’s decision, one thing is for sure – we feel lucky to have had a chance to see it before saying, Au Revoir.
